From Niagara Falls to Ottawa’s Parliament Hill to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, you’ll find plenty of tourist attractions in Ontario, whichever region you choose.
Ottawa boasts a host of Canada’s historic attractions and cultural institutions. The National Gallery of Canada is home to an extensive collection of masterworks from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, with a specialty in Canadian artists. Easily seen from the gallery is Parliament Hill, Ottawa’s famous Gothic Revival complex of government buildings – a popular spot in Ottawa, gathering over 3 million visitors annually. The Rideau Canal is another local favorite, its 125 miles of canals, lakes and rivers connecting Ottawa with Kingston since 1832.
Whether you’re riding the Maid of the Mist in the falls’ churning waters, or just observing the torrent from above, Niagara Falls is a must-see for any trip to southern Ontario. Ten miles north of the falls you’ll find the Butterfly Conservatory, where 600 feet of paths wind through the rainforest-like environment, and visitors can marvel as thousands of exotic butterflies flit and fly past gorgeous tropical vegetation. Those looking for a less thunderous Niagara experience should visit Niagara on the Lake, where the Niagara River empties into Lake Ontario. Also known as NOTL, this small town is home to a host of wineries, with ice wine their most famous varietal.
With institutions like the Hockey Hall of Fame and oddball architectural landmarks like the castle-mansion Casa Loma, Toronto is a tourist magnet. Canada’s Wonderland, the area’s biggest theme park, entertains millions of visitors from May to November with its 200 attractions, 15 roller coasters and theme areas ranging from Medieval Faire to Planet Snoopy. Shoppers flock to the St. Lawrence Market, where a host of restaurants, a gallery and a selection of delis, bakeries and butcher shops are complemented by weekly farmer’s and antique markets.
