From the medieval streets of Old Rhodes Town to the Rhodian Deer on Mandraki Harbor, Rhodes is packed with attractions sure to please even the most discerning tourist.
Old Rhodes Town is one of the oldest medieval cities in Europe, and a must-see destination for any traveler to Rhodes. Here you’ll find old palaces like the restored Palace of the Grand Masters, and the ruins of the Palace of the Knights of St. John. Traverse the cobblestones of the best-kept medieval walkway, the Odos Ippoton (Street of the Knights), lined with centuries-old Gothic buildings, or marvel at the minarets, mosques and Turkish baths that pepper the city - testament to the Ottoman occupation. The Rhodes Acropolis dates from the 2nd to 3rd century BC, boasting the Temple of Apollo, an ancient staium and theater.
The Collossus of Rhodes supposedly once stood guard of the Mandraki Harbor in Rhodes, and visitors today will enjoy the harbor and city views during a walk along the harbor’s Western Harbor Wall. Keep your eyes out for the nearby medieval windmills and the Fortress of St. Nicholas, while you can’t miss the bronze Rhodian Deer, which stand on tall columns where the Collossus himself once may have stood.
History and architecture buffs will love a visit to the Captain’s Houses in Lindos. These 16th and 17th century mansions once housed prosperous merchants, and many still boast original colorful pebble floors and ornate doorways. Many of the houses are now bars and restaurants, while just as many are still happily occupied by families.
Continue your historical tour to the city of Ancient Kamiros on the northwest coast of the island. Once an agricultural center, Kamiros boasted a three-level construction, with the Acropolis on the top level, the settlement on the second level and more temples, fountain houses and altars on the lower terrace. Here you’ll find some of the most ancient foundations on the island, dating before the 8th century B.C.
