Verdant green hills packed with mango, banana and coconut trees line the sands of Popoyo Beach, where surfers flock for the excellent waves. Playa Coco, considered by many to be Nicaragua’s best beach, boasts excellent swimming and boogieboarding, and plenty of small resorts and hotels for a multi-day stay. Those seeking a more adventurous day at the beach should venture up the Volcano Apoyo to Laguna de Apoyo, where dark volcanic sands line this 700 foot deep crater lake, surrounded by forests thrumming with life.

Nicaragua’s mountainous terrain makes for some great hiking destinations, with the basaltic cinder cone known as Popoyo Beach Cerro Negro (Black Rock) and the San Ramon Waterfall popular favorites. Those more inclined to lower altitudes will enjoy a walk through the Somoto Canyon. Only recently discovered, this canyon is the oldest rock formation in central America, and winds for over five miles with cliffs reaching more than 450 high.

And if you’re looking to just get away from it all, a day spent in the popular village of El Castillo is a must. Lounge by the water, go fishing or just stroll through the town, where locals farm and fish and go about their business. The nearby Indio Maiz Biological Reserve is a popular stop, as is the El Castillo de la Inmaculada Concepcion, a massive fortress on the banks of the Rio San Juan which was built to fend off English pirates and buccaneers in the 17th century.
