No visit to Interlaken is complete without climbing its mountains and splashing through its rivers and lakes. Tie up those hiking boots and dust off your wetsuit, because Interlaken is an outdoor town.
The only thing more beautiful than looking up at the Swiss alps, is looking down at the world from them, and there's no shortage of mountaintop vistas in Interlaken. Take in the town from the top of Harder Kulm, or take the century-old railway to the top of its big brother, the Jungfraujoch. The St. Beatus-Hohlen Caves, where you can wander through 3,000 foot deep caves, dodging stalactites and stalagmites, adds a little natural indoors to an outdoor afternoon.
Those looking to get wet will find their desires met in Interlaken, where Swissrafting and canyoning have become favorite sports for locals and tourists alike. Swissrafting is basically white-water rafting, but in Switzerland, whereas canyoning is like Swissrafting, but without the raft. Canyoners don wetsuits and helmets and tramp through rapids, rappel off cliffs and even slide down natural waterslides. A calmer aqueous time can always be had, either whiling away a quiet afternoon on the shores of Lake Thun, on the city's Western end, or at the famous waterfall in Lauterbrunnen.
