Whether you're hiking the Vintgar Gorge, climbing the Vrata Valley or just sightseeing from the ramparts of Bled Castle, you'll find no shortage of ways to fill up your days in Lake Bled.
The lake itself is a remarkable body of water - glacially carved, it stretches over 1.5 miles in length and 0.85 miles in width, surrounded by lush forests and the gorgeous Julian Alps. Bled Castle is a lake highlight, perched on a precipice on the north shore since before 1011 AD. Visitors to the lake must paddle out to Bled Island, home to the 15th century Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, a popular spot for local weddings.
Families can enjoy a leisurely afternoon's hike through the stunning Vintgar Gorge. Winding 1 mile through the deep crevasse carved by the Radonva River, you'll gaze up at stunningly sheer cliff walls rising more than 330 feet above your head. Those with a climbing bent can't miss Vrata Valley, a beautiful glacial alpine valley and one of the most popular climbing spots in Slovenia. Those less inclined to hiking and climbing but still in need of scenery should take a day's drive along the winding Vrsic Pass. This road snakes along the spine of the Julian Alps, providing fresh vistas at each of its 50 hairpin turns.
If the idyllic surroundings of Lake Bled become a bit too quiet, take a quick hour's drive southeast to the Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana. Highlights of this historic city include the Ljubljana Castle, Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Dragon Bridge, Tivoli Park and Butcher's Bridge. It's a great day trip for those seeking to add a little urbanity to their idyllic vacation in Lake Bled.
