From the ramparts of the ancient Bled Castle to the dizzying heights of the Vrsic Pass, Lake Bled features enough attractions to suit even the most discerning tourist.
Situated in the scenic Julian Alps, it's no surprise that hiking and climbing are two of the most popular sports in and around Lake Bled. The Vintgar Gorge is a tourist favorite - a one mile path through a deep river gorge, framed by sheer walls reaching 330 feet in height. Climbers flock to the Vrata Valley, a gorgeous glacial alpine valley with paths beginning at Aljazev Dom Hut. The winding roads of the Vrsic Pass are a great place for an incredibly scenic drive, but with its 50 hairpin turns along the spine of the Julian Alps, probably not for the faint of heart.
The highlight of any trip to Lake Bled is, of course, Lake Bled. This 1.5 mile long glacial lake is a popular spot for swimming and rowing, and is surrounded by lush forests and the gorgeous Julian Alps in the background. Perched on a precipice on the lake's north shore is the ancient Bled Castle, the oldest castle in Slovenia dating back to 1011AD and popular for its beautiful architecture and amazing views. Bled Island is another lake highlight, reachable by rowing to the island and climbing its 99 steps to the 15th century Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary - a traditional spot for local weddings.
Less than an hour southeast of Bled is Ljubljana, the capital and largest city of Slovenia. Highlights of this historic city include the Ljubljana Castle, Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Dragon Bridge, Tivoli Park and Butcher's Bridge. It's a great day trip for those seeking to add a little urbanity to their idyllic vacation in Lake Bled.
