Whether it’s snapping photos of the artillery at Battlefields National Park, or braving the bridge of the waterfalls of Chute-Montmorency, Quebec has something for everyone.
When it comes to tourist attractions, there’s no place more packed than Vieux Quebec, also known as Old Quebec. Perched high on a bluff over the St. Lawrence River, this walled city dates back to the 16th century. It’s easy to see the French influence here, from the narrow cobblestone streets to the open-air cafes, to the massive castle-like hotel the Chateau Frontenac, at the center of the city. Historic sites are everywhere here, from the 17th century Citadel, to North America’s oldest church, the gorgeous Notre Dame de Quebec Basilica.
After you take a ride on the Old Quebec Funicular, a steep 45 degree funicular railroad that transports passengers 200 feet down from Old Quebec’s Haute-Ville (Upper Town) to Basse-Ville (Lower Town) and back, don’t miss the Musee de la Civilization, specializing in the history of the humanities in Canada and the world over. And if the funicular isn’t scary enough, adventure seeker can take one of Quebec’s notorious Ghost Tours, 90 minutes of hair-raising sightseeing and storytelling that take place nightly in the old city.
If you happen to be in Quebec in Februrary, you can’t miss the massive Carnaval du Quebec. For 17 days over 1 million people flock to the city to celebrate and recreate, with canoe races on the St. Lawrence river, snow sculpture contests, massive ice slides and other wintry fun.
