IgoUgo.com Finds Travelers with Lower Budgets Look to Home Exchanges
Poll finds that the best way to stay with locals, go somewhere exotic or just get the heck out of dodge is by house swapping
NEW YORK – May 26, 2009 – IgoUgo.com says the best way to score a cheap vacation this summer is by shacking up in someone else’s…a-hem…house. As travelers are scrambling to get away this summer the cheapest way possible, home exchanges and house swapping have become more popular.
Last year, the economy forced many to reconsider travel plans and opt for “stay-cations” to save. This year, while travelers continue to cut back, if they get a little creative with their accommodations they may be able to get away. IgoUgo.com editors decided to ask some of their savvy members about the growing trend of the home exchange and were excited to find that this is the year for house swapping.
While 89% of IgoUgo.com members surveyed in the snap poll* had not participated in a home exchange, the recent poll showed that 72% would consider swapping their home for another’s on vacation. The recent interest in house swapping is partly due to the economy, with 32% stating they are more likely to consider a home exchange as part of their vacation and 43% stating they would swap to save money on accommodations while traveling.
But not all travelers are in it for the cheap vacation -- some travelers take advantage of home-exchange vacations to better experience their destinations (34%), for additional amenities not offered by hotels (25%) and for access to off-the-beaten-path destinations (23%).
"Home exchanges are a great way to experience a destination from a local’s perspective. Staying at a house offers a better feel for the culture and vibe of a particular place, plus you have the added perks of all the amenities offered in a home," said content manager Michelle Doucette.
For those looking for a house swap, IgoUgo has identified the top domestic and international cities for an exchange. When asked, members of the IgoUgo travel community were most interested in swapping their home for vacation digs in these top destinations:
